Every year on June 5, the United Nations celebrates World Environment Day, which serves as a major platform for raising environmental awareness and encouraging people to take action. This year's theme is 'Ecosystem Restoration,' which emphasizes the crucial need of sustaining eco-fragility for human well-being.
The theme of World Environment Day 2021 is "Ecosystem Restoration," and Pakistan will host the event. This World Environment Day will mark the start of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global effort to restore billions of hectares of land, from forests to farmlands, from the highest peaks to the deepest depths of the ocean.
Humans have been abusing and ruining the planet's ecosystems for far too long. Every three seconds, the globe loses enough forest to cover a football field, and we have lost half of the world's wetlands in the previous century. Global greenhouse gas emissions have increased for three years in a row, indicating that the world is on the verge of catastrophic climate change. We must now radically reconsider our relationship with the living world, natural ecosystems, and biodiversity, and try to restore it.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a group of plants and animals that interact with one another as well as their non-living surroundings in a specific location. Weather, earth, sun, soil, climate, and atmosphere are among the non-living surroundings. The ecosystem refers to the manner that all of these various organisms coexist in close quarters and interact with one another.
What is ecosystem restoration?
To transition from exploiting nature to healing it, ecosystem restoration entails avoiding, halting, and reversing the damage. Ecosystem restoration entails assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as the preservation of intact ecosystems. Restoration can take several forms, including actively planting or relieving pressures to allow nature to regenerate on its own.
How can the ecosystem be restored?
Forests, farmlands, towns, wetlands, and oceans are all examples of ecosystems that can be restored. Governments and development organizations, as well as corporations, communities, and individuals, can undertake restoration programs. Because the causes of degradation are numerous and diverse, they can have an impact on various scales.
Degradation can occur as a result of detrimental policies like subsidies for intensive farming or inadequate tenure laws that encourage deforestation, for example. Because of poor waste management or an industrial catastrophe, lakes and coastlines can become polluted. Commercial pressures can result in too much asphalt and too few green spaces in cities.
